The complexity of online bribery in sequential elections

چکیده

Prior work on the complexity of bribery assumes that happens simultaneously, and briber has full knowledge all votes. However, in many real-world settings votes come sequentially, may have a use-it-or-lose-it moment to decide whether alter given vote, when making decision not know what remaining voters will cast. We introduce model for, initiate study of, such an online, sequential setting. show even for election systems whose winner-determination problem is polynomial-time computable, setting vastly increase bribery, jumping up completeness high levels polynomial hierarchy or PSPACE. But we also some natural, important systems, dramatic does occur, pinpoint their problems.

The Complexity of Bribery in Elections

We study the complexity of influencing elections through bribery: How computationally complex is it for an external actor to determine whether by a certain amount of bribing voters a specified candidate can be made the election’s winner? We study this problem for election systems as varied as scoring protocols and Dodgson voting, and in a variety of settings regarding homogeneous-vs.-nonhomogen...

Complexity of Shift Bribery in Committee Elections

We study the (parameterized) complexity of SHIFT BRIBERY for multiwinner voting rules. We focus on the SNTV, Bloc, k-Borda, and Chamberlin-Courant, as well as on approximate variants of the Chamberlin-Courant rule, since the original rule is NP-hard to compute. We show that SHIFT BRIBERY tends to be significantly harder in the multiwinner setting than in the single-winner one by showing setting...

The Complexity of Online Manipulation of Sequential Elections

Most work on manipulation assumes that all preferences are known to the manipulators. However, in many settings elections are open and sequential, and manipulators may know the already cast votes but may not know the future votes. We introduce a framework, in which manipulators can see the past votes but not the future ones, to model online coalitional manipulation of sequential elections, and ...

The complexity of controlling candidate-sequential elections

Candidate control of elections is the study of how adding or removing candidates can affect the outcome. However, the traditional study of the complexity of candidate control is in the model in which all candidates and votes are known up front. This paper develops a model for studying online control for elections where the structure is sequential with respect to the candidates, and in which the...

Online Voter Control in Sequential Elections

Previous work on voter control, which refers to situations where a chair seeks to change the outcome of an election by deleting, adding, or partitioning voters, takes for granted that the chair knows all the voters’ preferences and that all votes are cast simultaneously. However, elections are often held sequentially and the chair thus knows only the previously cast votes and not the future one...
